How to Prepare your Home for Extreme Weather Conditions

In Southeast Queensland we face some challenging weather conditions be it high temperatures or heavy rain so we need our properties to be ready for the challenge. Here are some tips for you and your family to deal with some of the weather conditions we face in this part of the world.

  1. Inspecting and maintaining outdoor fixtures such as hoses and spigots is important. A couple of things to look for are damage to fixtures due to high temperatures and leaks to these fixtures, by spotting these early you can eliminate wastage of water in warm conditions. In heat waves it is important to make sure your hot water system is well maintained and insulated to handle any increased demand as well as considering the installation of temperature limiting devices for safety.
  2. When expecting heavy rain it is a good idea to keep your gutters and downspouts clear of debris to ensure there is proper drainage to reduce the risk of water damage. You can also have a roofing plumber inspect your roof to make sure there are no cracks or leaks that will be a major problem in heavy rain. Another tip is to install backflow prevention devices, this prevents sewage backups caused by heavy rain or floods.
  3. If you live in areas prone to bushfires you should consider having ember guards and screens installed on any roof vents, gutters and downpipes to prevent any embers from entering and causing any fires. Something to consider if you live rurally is to ensure that your water tanks and pumps are in good working condition for firefighting purposes and to maintain water supplies during any emergencies.
  4. In the event of strong winds it is important to tie down any permanent outdoor fixtures and put away any non-permanent fixtures to eliminate any damage to the fixtures themselves but also eliminate the risk of anything being blown into your property.

Make sure your property is prepared for the extreme weather conditions we face in Southeast Queensland by booking an inspection and any repairs that need to be completed to your property.
